Al-Fatiha, Key to the Quran — Tawhid

What is Surah Al-Fâtiha? Many people are still unaware that it is the first surah of the Quran, the most important one. Its name comes from the root fataha which means "to open". Al-Fâtiha was described by the Prophet (sws) himself as the "Mother of the Book". Its seven verses indeed condense the expression of faith, they dispose believers to stand in complete humility before the Most High, to glorify Him, celebrate His Mercy and to implore Him to guide them step by step on the Straight Path… Al-Fâtiha "sets the tone" for daily ritual prayer (practicing Muslims reciting it a minimum of 17 times per day), it "establishes the connection" between the creature and its Creator, in an effort of sincere dialogue with the One who surpasses us infinitely and gives what He wills to whom He wills. This is why it seemed to us that Al-Fâtiha should be the guiding thread of a first exploration of the Quran. Each of the words constituting its seven verses is indeed heavily laden with meaning, referring to notions fundamental to the proper understanding of the Islamic religion. We therefore sought throughout the Quran the use of terms from the same linguistic family as those of this noble surah, in order to enable the French-speaking reader to better access their meaning. We thus hope to make a modest contribution to the immense work of renewal of Muslim thought that is underway today.
