The author
Ismaïl Ibn Kathîr (1301–1373), whose full name is 'Imâd ad-Dîn Ismâ'îl ibn 'Umar ibn Kathîr al-Qurashî, is one of the greatest scholars of medieval Islam and a student of the famous Ibn Taymiyya. Exegete, historian, and jurist of the Shafi'ite school, he is the author of the monumental Tafsîr al-Qur'ân al-'Azîm and of the historical encyclopedia Al-Bidâya wa An-Nihâya, from which the present work is extracted. His methodological approach based on primary sources makes his writings uncontested references in the Islamic world.
