Six centuries separate the Revelation of the Gospels from that of the Quran. However, until the advent of Islam, there subsisted in Arabia a community of men and women, certainly little educated, but whose religious convictions had remained sound, the hanîf (pure sincere ones), eponym of Abraham's religious community. While it is commonly admitted that Abû Bakr was one of these people, the belonging of the Prophet's parents to this community is less evident. Nevertheless, is it permissible to exclude them from it? Or to say of them that they were polytheists? Yet some are certain that they are condemned to enter Hell!
As-Suyûtî and many other scholars rose up against this interference in the decisions of the Master of the Last Judgment and this reformist conception of divine clemency. Making Allah a pitiless Master, and His Messenger a man of stone! But beyond arguments, it is to the modesty and respect due to the person of the Prophet of Islam that an appeal is made.
To the question: Will the Prophet's parents go to Hell or to Paradise? What should one answer? What are the arguments?
Will all the magnanimity of as-Suyûtî, his tenacity and the extent of his knowledge be enough to convince the undecided and silence the polemicists? Even if the undertaking may seem arduous and the arguments sometimes rash, Imam as-Suyûtî spared no effort to achieve it. He devoted six theses (risâla) to this subject alone. In this work, we present the translation of the most complete one and the one that appears to us to be a synthesis of all the others.
